ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Working across cinema, contemporary art, and collaborative image-making, Oswaldo Colón Ortiz creates films where intimacy becomes political and personal stories reveal larger social histories. His work is driven by empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to exploring Puerto Rico through the lasting effects of colonialism, memory, family, migration, and cultural identity.
Rather than offering easy answers, his films invite dialogue, bringing audiences into emotionally charged worlds that are visceral, provocative, and deeply human. Whether directing narrative films, documentaries, music videos, commissioned work, or even post-production service, Colón Ortiz pursues stories that resonate beyond the screen and remain culturally meaningful over time.
His work has been presented at institutions, museums, publications, and festivals including MoMA, Art Basel, The Whitney Museum, MCA Chicago, MACPR, San Francisco Film Festival, Remezcla, Red Bull Arts, and Third Horizon Film Festival.
Colón Ortiz studied film at Syracuse University before earning a Master's degree in Film Directing from ESCAC in Barcelona.
His independent and collaborative productions are developed under Mapora Pictures, an independent production practice based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Mapora Pictures is an independent film production practice based in Puerto Rico, founded by filmmaker Oswaldo Colón Ortiz.
Working across narrative film, documentary, experimental cinema, music videos, branded films, and commissioned productions and postproductions, Mapora develops visually distinctive work rooted in empathy, artistic collaboration, and cultural inquiry. The practice partners with artists, musicians, cultural institutions, brands, and organizations seeking stories with emotional depth and lasting resonance.
Grounded in Caribbean perspectives and politically conscious storytelling, Mapora creates films that explore identity, memory, place, and the enduring consequences of colonialism while remaining open, accessible, humorous, and deeply cinematic.
Whether producing an independent feature or a commercial collaboration, the goal remains the same: to create unforgettable images that invite reflection, spark conversation, and endure beyond the moment.
